1 I Still Love You All/Vince Riccio
"This song is an instant floor filler in the North East. I love the
infectious jiving beat."
2 Churchbells May Ring/The Willows
"Awesome feelgood doowop jiver by an amazing vocal group. I can't
keep still when this song is played. I just have to hit the dance floor."
3 Pretty Girls Everywhere/Eugene Church
"The soulful voice of Eugene Church captivates me
and gets me up for a stroll."
4 Midnighter/The Champs
"Amazing saxophone and an intense beat that is such a pleasure to dance or listen to."
5 Boogie Chillun
"I'm a massive Slim Harpo fan. This song has to be the ultimate blues bopper with such a compelling beat."

1 Tough Lover/Etta
James
"I read in Etta's biography that she wrote this number with her idol Little Richard in mind. In fact she says that at the time she wanted to be the female Little Richard and I think that really comes across. I just love those 'Oooohs'."
2 Whole Lotta
Shakin'/Big Maybelle
"To me Maybelle's stomping shuffle beat
is the only way this song should be played. I would sell my soul to
have seen her perform this live."
3 Hello Little
Boy/Ruth Brown
"This song is crazy. It just gets faster and faster
and more manic. All the while Ruthie is egging her band along making
them rock it faster. To me this track shows what a first class performer
Ruth Brown was."
4 Romance In
The Dark/Lil Green
"This tune is soooo sexy. Lils sounds really cheeky and
sassy. I love women who are in charge of their own sexuality. Play
it by candlelight."
5 Weather Man/Wynona
Carr
"My favourite all time diva, who never really won the
kind of acclaim she rightly deserved. This song is just so uplifting...
That big soulful powerful voice backed only by organ bass and drums.
I would love to perform this number with my boys but add some huge
honking horn parts. I think we might take the roof off!"

1 Rock Around The Clock/Bill Haley & His Comets
"A truly perfect record... A buck-stops-here jumbo-sized
vocal from Bill blasts over a flawless display of driving rhythm'n'blues.
And that's before the guitar solo! Love it! Check it out through a
decent, loud club PA. It will make your hair stand on end!"
2 Don't Be Angry/Nappy Brown
"This guy is the most underrated
super talent of them all. How this record was not and is not bigger
is beyond me. It's super fun and at the same time super cool. Nappy
Brown had it all!"
3 Choo Choo
Ch'Boogie/Louis Jordan
"I grew up with this record. My father had it and played
when I was a kid. I played it yesterday. It's on the kitchen sound
system! This man was the character. Years ahead of its time for a
hit in the 1950s. You know you love this song."
4 Jailhouse
Rock/Elvis Presley
"Sorry, not going to score highly with real-dealers here,
but I've got to be honest... I love this tongue in cheek classic from
Mr Presley and the video too. This was honestly the first song I ever
danced to, one Christmas in the lounge. I was 4 years old."
5 Bim Bam/Sam Butera
"I confess to only first hearing this track a couple of months ago
when my double bass player brought it round. Love the the tom roll and the dark laugh
over a great driving rhythm. Super clever and, of course, Sam being the sax player of the
great Mr Prima. So what do you expect?"

1 Barnyard Boogie/Louis
Jordan
"My whole top five could feature this man. He could
wail, jump, shout, croon and swoon. A fantastic musician and band
leader. Cut in 1957 this song features crazy lyrics over a great boogie."
2 Midnight Cannonball/Big
Joe Turner
"Great side from Atlantic Records cut at
J&M Studio, Rampart Street, New Orleans. The boss blues shouter, shouting
the blues over a great jump blues session."
3 The Deacon
Don't Like It/Wynonie Harris
"Originally a gospel song recorded in 1953, Wynonie's unique vocal style rocks this song. A flamboyant larger than life rhythm'n'blues giant."
4 Move Me Baby/Jimmy
Witherspoon
"Great song, great feel. Johnny Otis band backing Jimmy's
vocal with the superb Lamplighters adding fantastic vocal harmony
as the band rolls along."
5 Butcher Pete/Roy
Brown
"Roy jumps straight in and the band follows, always
a hit an the dancefloor. The Young Pretender hits the scene running!
Go Roy go!"

a little Indian with his tomahawk."
2 Hey Now/Tiny

"A top r'n'b Jiver which always gets the
floor jumping."
3 Rhythm Called
Rock'n'Roll/Jimmy Haggett
"I love rockabilly boppers and this is at the top."
4 Tim Tom Special/Lionel

1 What'd I Say/Eddie Cochran
"I remember seeing Eddie at the Granada, Woolwich in
February 1960 (I was almost 13 at the time!) and he opened his set
with this. It's been released on the Rock'n' Roll Rebels CD
with Gene and Eddie doing live tracks from Boy Meets Girls
and Saturday Club."
2 Hey Bob-A-Leba
/Thurston Harris
"Great rousing track from an artist who
is often overlooked these days. I also like the 1950s version by Helen
Humes with Bill Doggett."
3 Mean Mean
Man/Wanda Jackson
"This one came out when we were being forced to listen
to endless drippy 'Bobby' singers. It still finds its way onto my
playlists."
4 Tribute To
Buddy Holly/Mike Berry & The Outlaws
"This one really takes me back to the days, just before
I left school, when every cafe you passed would have a few beefy motorbikes
outside, and tracks like this would be blaring from the jukeboxes.
Very nostalgic!"
5 Who's Pushing
Your Swing/Gene Vincent
"I love virtually everything this man did (well, except
Humpity Dumpity maybe!) This is my current favourite track,
but that position does vary quite a lot!"

1 Sweet little Sixteen/Chuck Berry
"'Tight dresses and lipstick, she's sportin' high-heeled
shoes.' Chuck's indispensable piece-de-resistance comes loaded with
rock'n'roll attitude plus a backbeat to die for. So forceful is the
rhythm, the big man doesn't appear to be pickin' his guitar at all.
It sounds like he's driving a damned train."
2 Ring-A-My-Phone/Brenda Lee
"No matter how many times I play this superfine track, it still curls my toes. The atmosphere is that of a ballroom filled with whirling, swirling couples, drawn to the floor like moths to a rock'n'roll flame. When guitarist Hank Garland takes what has to be his career best solo, the emotion is almost overpowering."
3 Ooh, Little Girl/Floyd Dixon
"'Cut me while I'm hot!' You can almost hear Floyd Dixon
hollering out such a phrase in the studio, knowing that he's hitting
top form. The backbone of Plas Johnson, Earl Palmer and Rene Hall
underscoring Floyd's sore-throated vocals represents the finest threesome
ever to cut rock'n'roll out on the coast."
4 A Big Hunk
O'Love/Elvis Presley
"Boom town rock'n'roll at its finest, and how appropriate that Elvis was the cat that licked the cream. Boasting a vocal delivery that is bigger than all outdoors, this record simply exudes authority. The level of confidence on show is appropriated by Floyd Cramer, who flicks his wrist at the keyboard defiantly."
5 Dance Me To Death/The Hi-Liters
"Any record that opens with 'I'm gonna plant you now and dig you later' deserves everyone's undivided attention. Coming on like a college combo let loose in the study hall, The Hi-Liters highlight their guitarist, piano player and sax man over no less than three wonderfully unhinged instrumental breaks."

1 The Girl Can't Help
It/Little Richard
"Without doubt the true king of rock'n'roll! This is
the song that got me hooked on the music. The way the saxophones bring the
song in, to Little Richard screaming his distinctive vocals over a rock
steady backbeat, followed by a great gravelly sax solo makes this song a
classic."
2 Saturday Night Fish
Fry/Louis Jordan
"This song is great in the way it tells
a story of what it was like to party back in the late 1950's in New Orleans.
Also I love the arrangement of the song, the way the verses are minor and
then switch to major for the chorus. One of the best front men and entertainers
as well as a great sax player. Louis Jordan rocks!"
3 Johnny B Goode/Chuck
Berry
"Another classic that started my love for rock'n'roll.
The way his guitar kicks this song in and the chorus, which I still have
to sing along to, means that this is still one of my all time greats. Every
rock'n'roll guitarist will have been influenced by this song one way or
the other."
4 Boogie Woogie Country
Girl/Big Joe Turner
"Boogie woogie at its best. Pumpin' piano played by Pete
Johnson with Joe Turner's powerful deep voice as well as the rest of the
band cookin'! I can never sit still when this record is played."
5 Caldonia's Wedding/Roy
Brown
"King of the blues shouters in my opinion, this is one
of Roy Brown's greatest songs. The beat gets me every time, especially with
his high wailing vocal style over the top and then the song just builds
and builds towards the end making this a classic R&B tune."

1 Tear It Up/Johnny
Burnette Rock'n'Roll Trio
"It says on the cover of my reissue: 'To be played at
maximum volume'. And you have to play it that way. Although the Rock'n'Roll
Trio have been overexposed on today's scene, the album still generates
as much excitement as when I first heard it."
2 The Complete
Buddy Holly
"I treasure this fantastic box set, put
together by John Beecher and Malcolm Jones. It contains everything
by musical genius, Buddy Holly. He was far ahead of his time, that
parts of the music scene still haven't caught up!"
3 The Sun Singles/Elvis,
Scotty and Bill
"This is where rock'n'roll all started.
It's difficult to imagine the furore that Elvis caused when he first
appeared, until you see some of the early films, that is."
4 Cocaine Blues/Roy
Hogshead
"Many may think this a strange choice. Others may not
know the artist or the album. My suggestion is to hunt down a copy,
and try to remember this pre-dates rock'n'roll."
5 Motorvatin'/Chuck Berry
"I was stuck between Gene Vincent and Chuck Berry for
my final choice, and Chuck won out simply because of his genius at
capturing the spirit of the 50s rock'n'roll scene with his lyrics."

1 Corrine Corrina/Big
Joe Turner
"I love all those old Joe Turner sides and this one
feels so good. The band grooves like mad, and sound like they’re having
a ball. It makes me want to play!"
2 Nadine/Chuck Berry
"I had to have a Chuck Berry tune. All
his songs tell a story and the lyrics seem much more grown up than a lot
of his contemporaries. I think he’ll be hailed as a major 20th century folk
poet, and that’s before you mention how influential his guitar playing’s
been."
3 On Revival Day/LaVern
Baker
"This is another record that just feels so good. Great
Paul Quinchette sax solo, proving you can be a Lester Young disciple and
still rock!"
4 Honey Hush/Johnny
Burnette
"It’s got a great ‘nervous’ thing about it."
5 Sincerely/The Moonglows

1 Goin' Back To Birmingham/Little Richard
"This will always be my number one. The power of his
voice with the ferociousness of the band is unbelievable when it kicks in.
I would give anything to be playing that song with that band at that time!"
2 Suffering With The
Blues/Little Willie John
"This is by far the greatest voice I have
ever heard. It's hard to pick one track in particular as he always delivers,
but this one kills me every time."
3 I Smell A Rat/Young Jessie
"Bring it on! Jessie's voice at its best."
4 Hound Dog/Big Mama
Thornton
"What a voice, what a gal. This is the only way Hound
Dog should be heard!"

Singin' To My Baby/
Eddie Cochran
"I first heard this when I was about four years old. It had an immediate
and profound effect on me, with the front cover making as much of an impression
as the music. From the moment that I heard the first track, Sittin' In
The Balcony, my life was never going to be the same again. Even now
I play this record quite often and I find myself totally in awe of the talent
that this guy possessed. He was only 18 at the time of the recording. It
was to be the only album released during his all too brief career."
2 Great Hits/Gene
Vincent
"Not long after Elvis died I was with my
dad walking through Woolworths. I wanted some more Elvis records, but Dad
said to me that if I was going to learn anything about r'n'r I should buy
a Gene Vincent LP. So I bought this record, took it home, put it on my old
record player and was immediately scared to death by what I was hearing!
This first experience with Vincent taught me a valuable lesson... Rock'n'roll
should be aggressive, moody, mean, scary, and it should frighten little
children."
3
The Sun Sessions/Elvis Presley
"In the early 80s my local station Chiltern Radio used
to have a three-hour rockabilly show every Sunday evening. I would lie in
bed with this little radio, which was designed to look like a Marlboro fag
packet, pressed up to my ear. This show was a godsend and introduced me
to the likes of Tennessee Ernie, Merrill E Moore, Johnny Burnette, Charlie
Feathers, Mac Curtis, etc. It was also the first time I ever heard any of
Elvis's Sun stuff and I was totally blown away. I'd heard The King even
before Cochran, so I'd been a big fan for years and his death affected me
greatly, but I was only familiar with the hits. I practically learned how
to play the guitar to this LP."
4
The Rock'n'Roll Trio/Johnny Burnette
"Sweet Love On My Mind, Rockabilly Boogie, Lonesome Train,
Please Don't Leave Me, Baby Blue Eyes... It doesn't get any better than this, does it?"
5 100% Cotton/The
Jets
"To me this is the greatest r'n'r LP made since the
50s and was hugely influential to me. I bought it when it was first released
in the early 80s and played it till I wore it out. Then I found another
copy and proceeded to wear that out. Now I've got it on CD and it's the
most played CD in the car. All the songs are superbly played, but it's just
one of those wonderfully rare records where you love every track. Over twenty
years later and I still play the bloody thing, and I still enjoy it tremendously."
